About The Position

This is a paraprofessional library position involving various administrative, clerical, public service, or technical tasks within an assigned section of the Library. Duties require independent judgment, creative thinking, and clerical knowledge, performed in accordance with established Library policies and procedures. During local emergencies, this position may be required to perform emergency tasks, potentially leading to extended work hours and time away from family. The anticipated schedule is Sundays (12 pm - 5:15 pm), Mondays (3:15 pm - 8:15 pm), Tuesdays (2 pm - 6:45 pm), and Saturdays (10 am - 3 pm), with Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays off.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and library experience.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computer systems.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in a clear and courteous manner to the public and other staff members.
  • Ability to work varying daily work schedules.
  • Ability to utilize a computer with proficiency in keyboarding skills and a working knowledge of standard computer applications such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to utilize a computer with proficiency in keyboarding skills.
  • May require lifting and carrying books and other Library materials weighing up to approximately twenty-five (25) pounds.

Responsibilities

  • In Circulation, perform tasks such as creating and maintaining library patron accounts, checking library materials in and out, and checking returned materials for damages and missing pieces.
  • In Youth Services, assist patrons with reference and reader's advisory inquiries, develop and present programs for youth and families, create craft activities, sort and shelve library materials, and create program flyers and posters.
  • Greet the public professionally and courteously in person and on the telephone, answer questions, provide information, or direct patrons to appropriate personnel.
  • Provide general information about the Library and its services at the Circulation Desk and refer patrons to appropriate personnel or areas.
  • Facilitate inter-library loan of materials through record-keeping, making requests/holds online, preparing materials for courier, notifying patrons, and checking materials in/out.
  • Compile, maintain, and report statistics regarding patron inquiries, author/title searches, and materials used daily.
  • Monitor reserve lists/requests for current status and update the computer accordingly.
  • Assist patrons with checking in and checking out books and other materials.
  • Respond to reference and reader advisory inquiries in person and by telephone, referring patrons to other library personnel when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the library collection, including basic reference and electronic resources.
  • Conduct tours and assist with library programs.
  • Compile bibliographies on selected topics under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Check in periodicals and newspapers daily, stamping and filing them according to designation.
  • Print overdue notices daily and prepare them for mailing.
  • Assist with unlocking and locking program rooms for users.
  • Assist patrons with copiers, printers, and public computers.
  • Circulate and shelve St. Petersburg College reserve materials for courses.
  • Stock informational materials at the desk and kiosk.
  • Shelve returned books and other materials; read shelves and check for missing books.
  • Prepare a variety of related reports, correspondence, and documents.
  • Oversee emptying of the book drop multiple times daily, including checking in materials.
  • Assist in preparing for the opening and closing of the Library and computers.
  • Sort books, tapes, and other materials for check-in according to library of origin.
  • Prepare materials for return to other libraries.
  • Shelve video tapes, CDs, audios, and books.
  • Open/close safe; distribute or secure cash, receipts, etc., including balancing the cash register.
  • Open library doors in the morning.
  • May train new employees in the Circulation Section.
  • May perform physical processing of books to make them "shelf ready" (stamping, attaching labels, pockets, book covers, etc.).
  • May perform cleaning, mending, or minor repairs to books and other materials.
  • Track service desk and workroom supplies and inform supervisor when supplies are needed.
  • Attend staff meetings and appropriate workshops and training opportunities.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of computer skills, including proficiency in keyboarding, Microsoft Suite, and Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of all departmental/divisional policies and procedures and the City's Personnel Policies and Procedures.
  • Strive to maximize effective communication between assigned personnel, other employees, and the general public.
  • Perform other job-related duties consistent with assigned Division responsibilities.
