About The Position

The Library Assistant/Digital Navigator supports outreach services and day-to-day branch operations while providing hands-on technology and digital literacy assistance to patrons. This position promotes library resources, and offers one-on-one and group support for computers, mobile devices, online services, and digitization equipment. The position ensures welcoming, informed service in the library and across the service area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience in customer service or a public-facing role, preferably in a library or educational setting.
  • Openness to acquiring knowledge and skills related to digitization equipment and associated software.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Technical proficiency in computer troubleshooting and familiarity with common software applications (Microsoft Office, Google Suite).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in mobile devices, to assist patrons with their use and troubleshooting related issues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of explaining technical concepts in clear, non-technical language.
  • Experience in a customer service role, demonstrating a positive attitude and ability to assist patrons of diverse skill levels.
  • Ability to identify issues, gather information, and provide effective solutions.
  • Skill in maintaining records and compiling reports accurately.

  • associate or bachelor's degree in library science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Issue library identifications, locate and check out materials to patrons, and inspect returned items for damage while recording and receiving overdue fines.
  • Handle requests for interlibrary loans and transport materials from book drops for sorting, ensuring efficient organization by classifying items according to their codes and repair needs before returning them to shelves or designated storage areas.
  • Prepare new materials for circulation, including property stamping, security stripping, and coding, while maintaining and updating borrower records as needed.
  • Provide general information about library services and facilities, assisting patrons with inquiries of a nonprofessional nature and referring them to appropriate staff when necessary.
  • Support patrons in using the public access catalog and discovering online services, including assistance with copying and faxing.
  • Design and prepare exhibits of library materials or decorations, fostering an engaging environment for patrons.
  • Offer one-on-one or group digital literacy assistance on topics such as internet basics, email setup, and common software applications like word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Support patrons with library computers, tablets, and other devices, troubleshooting basic technology issues related to hardware, software, and internet connectivity.
  • Assist patrons operate specialized digitization equipment, including scanners and audiovisual transfer tools, while providing guidance on best practices for preserving digital files.
  • Support patrons in accessing library digital resources, such as e-books, audiobooks, and databases, and assist with navigating online government services and educational platforms.
  • Develop and conduct workshops on relevant digital literacy topics, including online job search tools, social media use, privacy and security, and managing digital archives.
  • Maintain records of assistance provided, collect feedback from patrons on their experiences, and assist in compiling reports to evaluate program success.
  • Collaborate with librarians and staff to develop inclusive digital literacy initiatives, ensuring that all library services are accessible to a diverse range of patrons.
  • Maintain a positive, courteous demeanor with patrons and coworkers.
