About The Position

The Pike School seeks a part-time librarian beginning in the 2026-27 school year. This is a faculty position, with work to be performed 32 hours per week between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:20 pm. The specific schedule will be determined based on library needs, candidate availability, and overall school schedule. This is a 10-month position, starting mid/late August through mid/late June. The position will join a library department of two veteran librarians who job-share the head librarian role. The library team develops and executes programs and services collaboratively and flexibly, leveraging strengths and exploring professional interests. The team values young readers, faculty, staff, and families, aiming to provide a high level of service. They are described as fun-loving, curious, and believe in libraries as powerful spaces for learning, reading, and community. The mission of the Pike School Library is to nurture intellectual ambition, connect books with readers, and guide students, teachers, and parents/guardians in exploring information resources effectively. Programs and services are grounded in national standards of the American Association of School Librarians and thought leaders in diverse and inclusive children's literature. This includes providing access to diverse resources, partnering with faculty to enhance teaching and learning, promoting reading for self-discovery and reflection, and teaching critical thinking skills for responsible information use.

Requirements

  • Experience with engaging students in class discussions, fostering excitement for reading, and teaching process and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interest in working with students from age 4 to 14.
  • Current knowledge of children’s and young adult literature.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate positive working relationships with students, parents/guardians, faculty, and staff.
  • Competence with Google Apps for Education and library management software.
  • High level of emotional intelligence, flexibility, and curiosity.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to work autonomously when needed.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Desire to work in a dynamic, collaborative, and joyful independent school environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to libraries through work experience and/or coursework.

Nice To Haves

  • A combination of advanced coursework in library science or three years public or school library experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a school-wide reading culture through reading promotion displays, materials such as thematic reading lists, and literature enrichment experiences such as book groups.
  • Share responsibility for daily operations of the library.
  • Maintain circulation, patron, and materials records using Alexandria library software.
  • Assist with print collection maintenance and processing of new books.
  • Support a robust parent/guardian volunteer program.
  • Match students and teachers with resources that meet their informational, research, leisure, or educational needs.
  • Create customized resource guides for student inquiry/research projects.
  • Assist in the selection of products and services, such as subscription databases and print materials, which benefit student learning and research and support students’ leisure reading interests.
  • Together with head librarians, plan and provide learning opportunities to faculty/staff in the areas of library resources, digital literacy skills, ethical information use, and evaluating instructional materials through a culturally inclusive lens.
  • Work with head librarians to plan and teach weekly PreK - grade 4 Library Time sessions.
  • Collaboratively co-teach and provide individual assistance during content-area class visits for inquiry projects and reading unit support.
  • Share in responsibilities associated with the position or with membership on the faculty such as weekly duties and participation in faculty meetings, special events, and outreach programs.
