About The Position

Provides reference and reader's advisory services to library customers. Evaluates and selects materials for purchase and deletion. Tracks materials budget. Plans, coordinates, and provides library programs and outreach services. Assists customers in the use of personal computers and electronic resources.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science, or in Library and Information Science.
  • Other accredited Master's degree will be accepted when combined with one (1) year of professional Librarian experience in a public library or school library/media center.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required pre-employment background check and subsequent mandatory background checks in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of public librarianship
  • Knowledge of collection development principles and practices
  • Knowledge of reference/reader's advisory techniques and resources
  • Knowledge of programming and outreach methods
  • Knowledge of basic budgeting principles and recordkeeping
  • Knowledge of marketing and merchandising techniques
  • Knowledge of telephone etiquette
  • Ability to operate personal computer, automated library system, and other standard library equipment
  • Ability to work with computer software related to job-specific duties
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments
  • Ability to develop age-level appropriate programs
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and co-workers
  • Ability to work independently and also in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to problem solve and make sound decisions

Responsibilities

  • Provides reference and reader's advisory services and information about library policies, materials, services, and community resources in person, on the phone, or through electronic communications.
  • Provides staff with information on appropriate ways to deal with customers in the library, including children and/or young adults.
  • Evaluates and selects materials for purchase and deletion in the assigned area.
  • Monitors the allocation of the library materials budget.
  • Provides input on the branch collection development plan and strategic goals.
  • Develops, maintains, and participates in outreach activities to promote the use of library materials and services.
  • Creates, coordinates, and provides programs, activities, and resources for the library. Some may be targeted for outreach to children and young adults.
  • Assists customers in the use of personal computers and electronic resources.
  • Develops, monitors, and maintains the library's web pages and verifies links on the library's home page.
  • Serves as librarian-in-charge, as assigned or on a rotation basis, handling emergencies as well as customer complaints.
  • Participates in training workshops, committees, task forces, and other professional development activities.
