About The Position

Performs difficult professional work in the Public Library as the Division Manager for the Technical Services Division; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Library Director. Supervision is exercised over subordinate professional and paraprofessional personnel in the Technical Services Division.

Requirements

  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.
  • A valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina or must be eligible one.
  • Must have or be eligible for NC Public Librarian Certification.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in original & copy cataloging.
  • Experience with MARC records, classification of library materials, and the use of integrated library systems (ILS).

Responsibilities

  • Supervises all activities of the Technical Services Division.
  • Supervises all staff in the Technical Services Division, including scheduling and planning tasks, evaluating work performance, providing appropriate counsel, and maintaining personnel records.
  • Oversees and participates in interviews and evaluations of applicants and selection of staff.
  • Evaluates staff training needs and plans for the provision of staff training.
  • Provides for the training needs of the Technical Services staff by preparing written and oral training presentations as necessary, conducts staff training or delegates training to others as appropriate, and participates in presentations or evaluations of training sessions as necessary.
  • Develops objectives, policies, procedures, and plans for the Technical Services Division, including evaluating needs and resources, obtaining appropriate staff input, making decisions, and preparing written information in appropriate formats.
  • Works with the Assistant Library Director to ensure that divisional objectives, policies, procedures, and plans support the Library’s mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Assists the Assistant Library Director in budget preparation, which involves projecting future needs and setting priorities for the Technical Services Division.
  • Oversees the cataloging and processing of all library materials.
  • Performs original (including complex) and copy cataloging of all formats of library materials to facilitate their identification, access, and use.
  • Interprets and applies Library of Congress subject headings, the Dewey Decimal System, RDA, and the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) manuals in cataloging and classifying library materials.
  • Performs database maintenance for bibliographic records and individual library items.
  • Loads MARC record files from appropriate sources and vendors for all formats of library materials.
  • Supervises and reviews cataloging work assigned to others.
  • Supervises the development and maintenance of the Library’s integrated library system (ILS).
  • Maintains a financial tracking system for library materials expenditures.
  • Submits for payment via Workday or directly pays invoices for library materials.
  • Coordinates the provision of all Technical Services-related support activities provided to the Library’s public service divisions.
  • Serves as a member of the Library Management Team.
  • Takes part in professional conferences and meetings and keeps informed about current professional developments and literature.
  • Ensures that all work in the Technical Services Division is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
