About The Position

Performs professional library duties in support of the planning, organization, and implementation of day-to-day operations, and oversees specialized programs and collections for the Library system. The current vacancy in the Library Department is for a full-time bilingual (English/Spanish) position in the Branch and Neighborhood Services Division. Works under the general supervision of a Librarian III or designee, who outlines work, monitors work in progress and reviews completed work. Exercises general or direct supervision over assigned professional, paraprofessional, technical and clerical support staff and as-needed employees.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university.
  • Two years of paid work experience performing a variety of professional librarian duties in an area of specialized service such as adult services, technical services, youth services, circulation services, or outreach services in a public library.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid Class C driver license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of the required Library experience which includes leading and/or coordinating the work of others is desirable.
  • Bilingual skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assists internal and external customers in person, by telephone, and online by providing reference information and readers’ advisory services.
  • Selects, recommends, and locates library materials appropriate to customer needs and provides referral services.
  • Provides instruction in the use of the online catalog and electronic resources.
  • Selects, schedules, trains, reviews and evaluates work of assigned staff.
  • Engages in one or more of the following areas: programming, outreach, collection development, reference services, readers’ advisory, cataloging, acquisitions, system administration, materials circulation, information technology, branch operations and/or coordinating a specialized service or program.
  • Oversees and manages the acquisition, cataloguing collection development, maintenance and promotion of library materials within specific specialized areas or collections.
  • Coordinates, implements, and/or oversees special and/or system-wide library projects, such as local history, emergent literacy, and community and youth outreach and events.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with a variety of educational, cultural, community, and service organizations to promote and stimulate interest in and use of the library.
  • Maintains budgets, performs statistical analyses, monitors expenditures and maintains a variety of records.
  • May conduct studies and prepare reports and presentations.
  • Prepares grant requests and implements grants related to program and collection development.
  • Monitors grant expenditures and prepares reports.
  • Recommends the removal of library materials for binding, mending or discarding from collection, as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains library systems and applications, assists with system upgrades and software implementations in coordination with Principal Librarian or Librarian III.
  • Maintains databases and indexes, as assigned.
  • Coordinates and oversees circulation activities within the library.
  • Responds to inquiries and resolves patron problems and disputes in such areas as compliance with library rules of conduct or late/lost materials fees.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
