About The Position

The Connecticut State Library (CSL) is seeking agency employees for a Part-Time Librarian 1 position. This role involves learning about Connecticut's historical and cultural background, as well as its social, political, and governmental structures. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about working with materials in various formats, committed to long-term projects, and will assist patrons with research, manage collections, and support digitization efforts. The Connecticut State Library serves government officials, students, researchers, and the public, and is home to the State Archives, Museum of Connecticut History, and more.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in library science or information science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association
  • Knowledge of professional principles and practices of library science including classification systems, reference sources and techniques, acquisition, cataloging and filing, bibliographic sources of information and library automation
  • Knowledge of library administration principles and techniques
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems relating to library methods and procedures
  • Ability to utilize computer software
  • Must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service, absent any applicable collective bargaining language

  • Provide documentation from a recognized USA accrediting service for foreign education equivalencies if applicable

Responsibilities

  • Staff the History & Genealogy Unit reference desk
  • Staff the Secured Collections Reading Area as needed
  • Assist patrons with locating and using materials from the State Library secured collections as well as the State Archives
  • Correspond with patrons using written and electronic formats to answer their queries
  • Learn about the library's resources by updating existing research guides, and finding aids and creating or adding to these using primary source materials
  • Support efforts to digitize and make accessible the library's unique resources
  • Performs professional library duties in areas such as cataloging, interlibrary loan, reference, bibliographic services, and collection management
  • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules and services
  • Explains and assists in use of reference sources, catalogs, indexes and automated data bases
  • Describes or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files
  • Searches catalog files and shelves to locate information
  • Assembles and arranges displays of books and other library materials
  • Maintains reference and circulation materials
  • Answers correspondence on special reference subjects
  • May compile subject bibliographies
  • May select, order, catalog and classify materials
  • May review and update records retention and disposition schedules for state agencies
  • May plan and direct or carry out special projects
  • May operate a small law library
  • May train assigned staff
  • May conduct workshops
  • May serve as liaison to library groups and organizations
  • May compile reports and statistics
