Liaison Engineer – Composite Structures III - New Glenn

Blue Origin•Space Coast, FL
•Onsite

About The Position

The Liaison Engineer – Composite Structures III supports the development and operations of Blue Origin’s New Glenn heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle. The role provides on-the-floor engineering support, owns resolution of build issues, and drives continuous improvement across the production system. It applies structural and manufacturing knowledge to protect configuration, improve yield and production flow, and ensure hardware readiness for test and flight, with a focus on Payload Accommodations (PA) hardware, including large composite structures and composite and metallic components, subassemblies, and installations. The engineer serves as the primary engineering liaison for PA hardware, coordinating across design, manufacturing, quality, test, and operations. The position requires hands-on support in a production environment and technical ownership of nonconformance disposition, repair plans, build issues, and production risks. The role is full-time and on site, with off-shift or weekend coverage as production needs require. Relocation may be provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant production, test, or sustaining engineering experience in aerospace structures, launch vehicles, or aircraft, including significant experience with composite structures.
  • Hands-on experience supporting hardware on a production floor, including direct interaction with technicians, quality, and manufacturing engineering.
  • Working knowledge of metallic and composite structural design and behavior, including primary and secondary structures, installations, mechanisms, and coatings, and associated fabrication processes such as automated fiber placement, cure, sandwich composites, composite trimming and drilling, secondary bonding, and repairs.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting engineering drawings, 3D models, and work instructions.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis fundamentals and failure modes, including yielding, buckling, fatigue, fracture, and bearing, sufficient to assess dispositions and repairs for metallic and composite structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to disposition nonconformances and repairs for metallic and composite structural designs in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and experience leading cross-functional root-cause and corrective-action efforts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with technicians, engineers, and leadership.
  • Ability to work full-time on site and support off-shift or weekend coverage as required by production needs.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with large structural sandwich composites and associated installations.
  • Metallic or composite analysis and/or repair experience.
  • Experience with MRB authority, nonconformance systems, and configuration management in a regulated aerospace environment.
  • Prior liaison or production-support engineering experience working daily with manufacturing and test operations.
  • Background in design for manufacturability, lean manufacturing, and continuous improvement for complex assemblies.
  • Experience supporting readiness for structural and acceptance testing of tanks and large structures.
  • Demonstrated success influencing design and process changes to improve production quality, cost, and schedule.
  • Creo/Windchill or CATIA experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary engineering liaison for Payload Accommodations hardware, including large composite structures and composite and metallic components, subassemblies, and installations.
  • Support hardware on the production floor and coordinate across design, manufacturing, quality, test, and operations.
  • Own Material Review Board disposition of nonconformances, concessions, and repair plans for PA hardware in partnership with responsible design engineers.
  • Lead triage, root cause analysis, and corrective actions for build issues, escapes, and test anomalies affecting hardware builds.
  • Support daily production operations by responding to line-stop issues, triaging defects, reviewing test data, and clearing blockers while protecting safety and quality.
  • Coordinate with design owners to implement Engineering Change Requests and Engineering Change Orders for PA hardware.
  • Provide feedback to improve drawings, models, instructions, and specifications.
  • Analyze and monitor production defects and test escapes to identify trends and drive systemic improvements that reduce rework, scrap, cycle time, and risk.
  • Support readiness reviews, root-cause and corrective-action efforts, and anomaly boards by preparing and presenting technical content related to PA hardware.
  • Maintain and communicate the status of key production risks, mitigations, and process improvements for PA hardware.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians on build intent, inspection criteria, and acceptable conditions.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.
  • Stock options for regular employees working at least 20 hours per week.
  • Up to four weeks of paid time off per year based on weekly scheduled hours.
  • Up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Depending on role type and job level, employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses based on company discretion.
