About The Position

Anthropic is seeking a Legal Specialist (Law Enforcement) to join its Litigation, Regulatory & Policy team. This role is crucial for developing the company's legal function, specifically managing responses to law enforcement and government requests for user data. The position involves navigating the complex regulatory environment of the AI industry and will extend into legal operations to support the broader team. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player adept at building relationships and working towards shared objectives.

Requirements

  • Experience in a legal operations, business/operations manager, or paralegal role in an in-house legal department, or similar experience.
  • Direct, front-line experience handling law enforcement or government requests for user data, including subpoenas, court orders, warrants, preservation letters, and emergency disclosure requests.
  • Working knowledge of the legal framework for law enforcement access to user data, including the Stored Communications Act and the mechanics of foreign and cross-border requests such as MLATs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and maintain the highest standards of discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive legal matters, including under time pressure.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience owning an intake, queue, or docketing process end to end, including deciding what gets escalated and maintaining rigorous tracking.
  • Comfort operating and improving the tooling a legal process runs on (trackers, spreadsheets, forms, aliases, and simple automations), with a willingness to make changes directly rather than route every change to someone else.
  • A proactive, solutions-oriented approach to identifying, recommending, and implementing process improvements within the legal department.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of experience in legal operations, business/operations management, or a paralegal role in an in-house legal department.

  • Experience building or scaling a law enforcement response process.
  • Experience managing legal intake process within a growing company.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and creatively, adapting to new challenges and finding practical solutions to complex legal issues.
  • Familiarity with legal project management software such as Asana, Trello, or Jira, and a willingness to learn and adopt new tools to streamline legal processes.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end response to law enforcement and government requests for user data, including subpoenas, court orders, search warrants, preservation letters, and emergency disclosure requests from domestic and foreign authorities.
  • Prepare and execute data productions: scoping, data retrieval, coordination with counsel, and eventual production.
  • Handle foreign and cross-border process, including MLATs and letters rogatory, and manage escalations across jurisdictions.
  • Handle civil third-party subpoenas and preservation demands.
  • Maintain expertise in where user data lives across Anthropic's product surfaces and operate the internal data retrieval tooling.
  • Run and improve the law enforcement response process and tooling.
  • Partner with Trust and Safety, Security, Privacy, and Engineering on requests that touch user accounts, investigations, or safety escalations.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel, alongside in-house counsel, on objections, challenges, and narrowing.
  • Produce recurring reporting on request volume, deadlines, and queue health, and support Anthropic's periodic transparency reporting on government requests.
  • Monitor legal developments in government access to user data and advise the team on their operational impact.
  • Support litigation and regulatory matters and stretch beyond core responsibilities as needed to support the legal team's objectives.
