About The Position

We are seeking a Legal Research Analyst to support the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona (USAO-AZ) in Phoenix, Arizona. In this role, you will assist Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) with legal support that helps advance civil litigation, habeas corpus, and immigration habeas matters. Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to make responsible decisions on short notice and adapt to unexpected developments
  • Physically located within the general geographic commuting radius of the USAO office
  • Valid state driver’s license
  • Minimum two (2) years of professional work experience
  • Experience performing legal research, case analysis, drafting, docketing, calendaring, and litigation support services
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
  • U.S. citizenship is required as it supports the U.S. federal government
  • Must be able to successfully complete a Tier II Civil background investigation

Responsibilities

  • Work with assigned AUSAs and supervisory attorneys to review applicable laws, regulations, defenses, violations, and causes of action
  • Research and analyze federal, state, and local laws, including criminal and civil rules and procedures
  • Review case files, analyze case-related information, and alert attorneys to potential legal or procedural issues
  • Support 28 U.S.C. § 2255 habeas corpus and immigration habeas matters through docketing, calendaring, file coordination, drafting, and timely filing support
  • Coordinate with AUSAs and support staff to locate case files and materials needed to prepare legal responses
  • Analyze statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules, regulations, and law review articles related to assigned cases
  • Support complex or unusual matters by briefing attorneys on relevant facts, legal issues, and case law
  • Draft correspondence, legal documents, and proposed responses for attorney review and signature
  • Prepare proposed orders for review and signature by judges and magistrates
  • Maintain awareness of new criminal and civil rules and procedures that may affect assigned matters
