About The Position

The Legislative Analysis Division (LAD) of the North Carolina General Assembly is seeking law students for a 10-week paid Summer Legal Intern position. This internship offers an opportunity to engage with law and policy in a collegial environment and contribute to the legislative process. LAD provides nonpartisan legal counsel and drafting services to legislative committees and offers legal and policy information to all legislators. Interns will work with attorneys and staff on legal and policy research requests, assist with bill drafting and legislative summaries, and attend committee meetings and General Assembly sessions to understand the legislative process.

Requirements

  • Completion of two years at an accredited law school prior to beginning the internship.
  • Demonstrated interest in nonpartisan State service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal and other research support for members of the General Assembly.
  • Work with LAD attorneys on legal and policy research requests for legislators.
  • Assist in preparation for committees, including introductory bill drafting and drafting of legislative summaries.
  • Attend and observe committee meetings and sessions of the General Assembly to develop a deeper understanding of the legislative process.
