About The Position

The ACLU of Massachusetts (ACLUM) is seeking applications for its Summer 2027 legal internship. This paid internship offers a unique opportunity for second-year law students to engage in cutting-edge civil rights and civil liberties issues. Interns will work closely with the ACLUM Legal department on a variety of tasks, including complaint investigation, legal research and memo writing, drafting legal documents such as complaints, affidavits, and discovery requests, and assisting with pretrial motions, trial preparation, appellate briefs, and oral arguments. Interns will be supervised by an assigned managing attorney and may also support the Legislative Director in developing legislative testimony and public policy materials. The internship is designed to be a 10-12 week program, commencing between mid-May and early June 2027, with a standard work schedule of 40 hours per week. The pay rate for this position is $22 per hour.

Requirements

  • Current law school students who will have completed their second year of law school before the internship commences.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analysis skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in and familiarity with issues related to civil rights, civil liberties, and social justice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration abilities.
  • Self-motivated with proven ability to work well with colleagues at all levels of an organization, and a wide range of partners within and outside the organization.
  • Residency in Massachusetts or within a 60-mile radius of Boston in a contiguous New England state is required for the duration of employment.
  • Must show proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to commencing employment.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate complaints.
  • Conduct legal research and write memos.
