About The Position

JRI Health Law Institute (HLI) seeks a Legal Intern to join their team! JRI Health provides an array of support services to help people living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS achieve the health and justice we all deserve. In keeping with this mission, the JRI Health Law Institute (HLI), a legal services program embedded within JRI’s Health Division, uses harm reduction principles to provide holistic, collaborative, trauma-informed civil legal services through a medical-legal partnership. HLI strives to provide equitable access to our services by prioritizing marginalized communities that have been disproportionately impacted by longstanding, structural racism as well as those disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS. Our clients’ needs and wishes guide the work that we do. As advocates, we see our role as providing legal expertise, support, and helping to amplify our clients’ voices.

Requirements

  • Current law student from an accredited law school, excellent academic credentials.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with low-income individuals, people with disabilities, people living with HIV/AIDS and/or Hepatitis C, people of color, people with a history of addiction, homelessness and/or incarceration, and members of the LGBTQ community.
  • Excellent legal research, writing and oral advocacy skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to handle a demanding case load while maintaining client records in an accurate, timely and confidential manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn legal case management software (ProLaw).
  • Commitment to JRI Health’s mission to partner with individuals, families, and communities to achieve the health and justice we all deserve.

  • Preference for 3:03 certified law student.
  • Bilingual/bicultural applicants preferred.

Responsibilities

  • All aspects of direct representation of clients in state courts and before administrative bodies or tribunals.
  • Areas of law include housing eviction defense and other landlord/tenant issues, Social Security benefits, CORI issues, and other legal issues affecting client health.
  • Tasks include all aspects of direct legal assistance, including pretrial and trial practice.
  • Legal rights education to clients, community groups, collaborating agencies and JRI staff and participate in statewide coalitions of legal service providers.
  • Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary
