About The Position

The ACLU seeks a Summer Legal Intern for the Reproductive Freedom Project at its National office in New York City. This is a remote or hybrid position open to matriculated legal students based in the U.S. The Reproductive Freedom Project works to ensure access to affordable and stigma-free abortion care, litigating cases to preserve and expand abortion access, challenging restrictions on medication abortion, and advocating for reproductive health and justice. The project also works on issues beyond abortion, such as advocating for birth equity. The ACLU's approach involves collaboration with its nationwide network of state affiliates and specialists in various legal areas.

Requirements

• Currently matriculated legal students who will have completed at least one year of law school before the internship commences
• Must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship
• Excellent legal research and writing skills
• Ability to conduct complex legal analysis
• Strong oral communications skills and the ability to explain complicated legal issues
• Ability to balance multiple assignments, to communicate with colleagues, and to accept and incorporate feedback
• A collaborative attitude – be a team player
• Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, civil rights and liberties, and social justice

Nice To Haves

• A demonstrated commitment to reproductive health rights and justice is a plus, but is not required

Responsibilities

• Conducting legal research and analysis
• Aiding in drafting memoranda, motions, declarations, and legal pleadings
• Providing general assistance on active litigation, including cite-checking
• Supporting development of new litigation projects
• Working on fact development
• Conducting background research
• Tracking and analyzing bills

Benefits

• Stipend available for lawfully authorized workers
• Partial stipend for students receiving outside funding to bring total funding up to ACLU's stipend level
• Stipend amount of $24/hour (stipends are taxed)
