About The Position

The ACLU seeks a Spring Legal Intern for the Immigrant Rights Project of the ACLU’s National office. This position can be remote or hybrid and based in San Francisco. The internship is for course credit only and requires applicants to be currently matriculated legal students based in the U.S. for the entire duration. The Immigrants’ Rights Project, with offices in New York and San Francisco, has a 40-year history of litigating to protect the civil rights and civil liberties of immigrants, focusing on due process, access to courts, unfair detention, equal treatment, and state/local laws. Their work includes challenging removals, targeting of student activists, family separation, the Muslim ban, asylum system attacks, indefinite detention, immigration detainers, anti-immigrant laws, profiling, and attempts to eliminate judicial review. They collaborate with national ACLU offices, affiliates, and allied organizations for litigation and advocacy.

Requirements

  • Currently matriculated legal students
  • Must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship
  • Completed coursework before the internship commences
  • Excellent research skills, including conducting internet and legal database research
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizing and time-management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • The initiative to see projects through to completion

Responsibilities

  • Drafting memoranda, affidavits, and briefs
  • Conducting legal and policy research
  • Researching prospects for new litigation, including both factual and legal claims
  • Researching and drafting materials for public education
  • Legislative bill tracking and analysis
