About The Position

Reporting to the Head of Legal Affairs, the mission of the Legal Counsel, U.S. Commercial Operations, is to be a trusted and agile business partner, identifying legal risk in a timely, pragmatic, and commercially focused manner to support growth and make customers’ lives easier while safeguarding the company’s assets. This position will assist in the build of the U.S. commercial law function by becoming an elite member of a team designed to be the go-to legal partner to a dynamic group of business stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bar admission and license to practice to law in the U.S., member in good standing.
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Bar admission and license to practice law in the U.S., member in good standing.
  • 3- 5 years of experience (in-house and law firm).
  • Experience in structuring, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of agreements and identifying key issues and risks, preferably with experience in general commercial transactions and business counseling.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with capability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal audiences.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with an aptitude to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Practical, business-oriented approach with an ability to effectively balance risk mitigation with business needs.
  • Passion for legal process and system development and improvement.
  • Comfortable advising on a broad and shifting array of retail legal issues, including the enthusiasm to counsel on new and trending areas of law.
  • Ability to work comfortably while processes and systems are being established.
  • Collaborative spirit with a sense of humor.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience advising retail clients is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, negotiate, and review a variety of domestic and international commercial agreements, including marketing, merchandising, manufacture, transportation, supply chain, technology, licensing, fuel, consulting, and other operational agreements.
  • Provide practical solutions-based legal counsel to various national and international business stakeholders on a wide variety of legal and business issues.
  • Assist in the creation, implementation, and refinement of forms, processes, procedures and systems to support the effective delivery of enterprise commercial legal support.
  • Work cross-functionally with teams across the company to analyze legal risks, devise creative solutions, and develop trusted advisor relationships.
  • Educate business partners with regard to key legal, risk, competition, compliance, data privacy, and regulatory considerations, both in day-to-day interactions and in structured training sessions.
  • Maintain an understanding of Circle K’s strategic objectives, products, and services.
  • Monitor and communicate legal developments that would impact the company’s business lines to proactively help business partners “see around corners”.
