About The Position

As a Legal Associate, you will play a key role in supporting the Legal Team by performing a variety of administrative and operational functions that help protect the credit union’s interests and mitigate risk. This position requires exceptional attention to detail, strong analytical and numerical skills, and the ability to accurately process high volumes of information. Reporting to the Legal Services Manager, the Legal Associate is responsible for reviewing and processing legal documents, bankruptcy notices, estate matches, levy orders, account research, document retrieval requests, and other legal support activities. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, accuracy, critical thinking, and the ability to identify discrepancies, analyze data, and ensure legal matters are handled promptly and correctly.

Requirements

  • Associates degree or commensurate experience is Required.
  • 3+ years with legal field or financial institution is Required.
  • Excellent verbal, written, listening, and interpersonal communication skills are Required.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy is Required.
  • Proficient computer skills, with intermediate level skills in Excel, with the ability to navigate among several system applications and software programs is Required.

Responsibilities

  • Document retrieval and redaction of all personal identifiable information in preparation for filing with court system.
  • Review all incoming levies and garnishments and freezing funds in accounts immediately upon receipt of same.
  • Manage estate/probate claims process which includes filing claims and satisfactions, review accounts with filed claims, and correspondence with estate counsel or personal representative to get the claim settled.
  • Review all incoming subpoenas issued to Connexus, prepare all required documents, and submit same to requesting authority.
  • Process and code new Bankruptcy filings in all applicable programs. Ensure that CU interests are protected as well as processes are continued appropriately and timely upon termination of the stay, including determining bankruptcy status, utilizing internal department applications, and moving loans to the next stage in the process. Prepare and send documents and correspondence to attorneys.
  • Verify critical dates and review electronic court docket for updated case status and make appropriate notes and follow-ups.
  • Respond to phone calls, internal requests, and written correspondence from all parties involved in legal matters.
