About The Position

USAA is seeking a Legal Assistant for its Fairfax, VA staff counsel law office. This role provides assistance with legal work under the supervision of an attorney, including research, contract administration, document preparation, and trial preparation. The work focuses on personal injury auto defense law, covering motor vehicle accident claims, insurance coverage, liability disputes, settlements, and litigation. The position offers a flexible work environment with a mix of office and remote work. Relocation assistance is not provided.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
  • Up to 1 year of experience in legal support or related experience.
  • Experience with multi-tasking in a fast-paced and complex business environment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of experience as a Legal Secretary, Executive Assistant, or Administrative Assistant supporting attorneys in a personal injury law firm or litigation practice.
  • Experience utilizing court e-filing platforms and systems in Virginia (VA), Washington, D.C. (DC), and Maryland (MD).
  • Experience managing complex attorney calendars, scheduling depositions, mediations, independent medical examinations (IMEs), client appointments, and coordinating case-related meetings.
  • Strong administrative support skills, including preparing and proofreading legal documents, managing correspondence, maintaining case files, obtaining medical records and bills, and serving as a primary point of contact for clients, medical providers, insurance carriers, and opposing counsel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and legal case management systems.
  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing support for the investigative process by gathering documents and information for legal assignments.
  • Assist with research documents and preparation of reports under supervision.
  • Assist with administrative tasks including calendar management, check writing/requesting, copying, and handling mail.
  • Facilitate the exchange of information between attorneys and outside counsel.
  • Communicate with USAA members to obtain or share information.
  • Resolve routine issues, collaborate with team members on problem-solving, and identify situations requiring escalation.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.
