About The Position

The Legal Assistant (Refugee & Immigration) will support The Refugee Centre’s legal team in providing legal information and assistance to refugees and other newcomers. The role focuses on preparing clients and their evidence for hearings at the Refugee Protection Division, while also supporting legal information workshops and assisting legal professionals with day-to-day casework. This position does not involve the independent provision of legal advice but requires strong organizational skills, communication abilities, and sensitivity to the unique experiences of refugees and newcomers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Legal Studies, Administration, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills in French and English (oral and written).
  • Fluency in an additional language commonly spoken by refugee populations, particularly Spanish.
  • Proficiency in English or another language is required for this position in order to communicate with a predominantly English-speaking or allophone clientele.
  • Proficiency in GSuite, database management, and digital tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a legal, nonprofit, or refugee support setting.
  • Knowledge of immigration, refugee, or human rights law.
  • Experience in client-facing roles, community outreach, client advocacy, or volunteer coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with clients to collect information, prepare evidence, and assist with legal forms.
  • Support lawyers, paralegals, and legal volunteers with case preparation, translations, and research.
  • Act as a liaison between clients and legal professionals, ensuring clear and respectful communication.
  • Assist in planning and delivering legal information sessions for clients and community stakeholders.
  • Provide logistical and research support for training workshops.
  • Organize and maintain legal case files, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Track case progress and deadlines in coordination with the legal team.
