About The Position

Provides legal administrative support to the City Prosecutor and other professional staff. This role does not involve supervisory responsibilities. The Legal Assistant will be responsible for preparing and proofreading legal documents, monitoring legal documents for Municipal Court cases, maintaining filing systems, managing office supplies, coordinating with witnesses, preparing court dockets and citations, handling routine correspondence, greeting visitors, answering phones, processing mail, and performing other related duties as assigned. Employees are expected to conduct themselves in a professional, communicative, informative, fair, honest, and respectful manner.

Requirements

  • Skills in typing, word processing, filing, and the use of other office technologies and equipment.
  • Knowledge in drafting correspondence and various legal documents, as well as the ability to review police reports to obtain necessary information needed for legal correspondence.
  • Knowledge in preparing and responding to various discovery requests.
  • Knowledge of general office procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Municipal Court legal processes and proceedings.
  • Ability to deal professionally with the public.
  • Ability to work independently when required and follow up on assignments without being prompted.
  • High School diploma.

Nice To Haves

  • One to three years’ prior experience in a law office or other governmental entity.
  • Associate’s degree in a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and proofreads drafts of legal documents under supervision of an attorney.
  • Monitors legal documents for Municipal court cases.
  • Establishes and maintains accurate and complete office filing system.
  • Monitors office supplies.
  • Communicates with and coordinates with witnesses to ensure appearance for Municipal court proceedings.
  • Reviews and prepares Municipal Court dockets and Municipal Court Citations for City Prosecutor.
  • Prepares routine correspondence.
  • Greets office visitors and assists as necessary.
  • Answers phone and answers citizen inquiries or refers to an attorney or other City department.
  • Processes mail.
  • Performs all other related duties, as assigned.
