This vacancy is with the Department of the Attorney General, in the Child Support Enforcement Agency Division. The position performs substantive legal work that attorneys otherwise perform, with the exception of giving independent legal advice, appearing in court, or performing other duties that constitute the unauthorized practice of law. Legal Assistants provide preliminary legal consultation services, answer questions based on attorneys' previous interpretations or decisions, and serve as a liaison between attorneys and clients. They also conduct legal research, prepare summaries of decisions, laws, statutes, and legal subjects, and collect, analyze, and evaluate evidence for court hearings. Additionally, they draft briefs, memos, legal opinions, stipulations, orders, and other legal documents for attorney review. Level II positions are independent workers fully competent in basic Legal Assistant functions. Level III positions are journey workers under general attorney supervision, providing the full range of Legal Assistant services in an assigned program area, including training new employees.
