About The Position

The City Attorney advises and represents the City Council and City departments on all legal matters in which they are involved and prosecutes state law misdemeanors and Municipal Code violations that occur within the City of Torrance. To accomplish this goal, the office is divided into three divisions: General Advice, Civil Litigation and Criminal Prosecution. As part of the Office of the City Attorney, the Legal Assistant I performs a broad range of legal and administrative support duties. The Legal Assistant I also transcribes audio recordings; maintains the City Attorney's law library by updating materials, documents and references as needed and maintains a current database of all information; processes invoices and contracts for payment; and acts as a liaison between court staff, attorneys, and City employees. Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • A minimum of one year of recent experience in a law office or criminal justice setting in an administrative or clerical role; or completion of a legal secretarial program that required a minimum of one year of study.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License and safe driving record may be required for assignment to some positions in the classification.
  • Experience performing the accurate input of data or performing clerical or administrative support.
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple projects and assignments.
  • Ability to adapt easily to a fast-paced environment.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with the public, other departments, City officials, and the court.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a public agency is preferred.
