About The Position

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Idaho State University invites applications for a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure-track Lecturer position in Civil Engineering with a focus area of Geotechnical Engineering. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong interest in teaching and mentoring students and will contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate instructional mission. This position requires teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in civil engineering, with a specialization in geotechnical engineering and related areas of the civil engineering or geology. The teaching expectation is four courses per semester. Courses are usually delivered in person on the Pocatello campus and potentially through distance-learning formats to the other campuses and online students via Zoom. This position is focused on teaching, student mentoring, curriculum development, and service including student clubs and advising. The expected start date is either the Fall 2026 Semester or the Spring 2027 Semester. This position is not eligible for new visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates who already hold valid U.S. work authorization may be considered.

Requirements

  • Earned Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related field by the time of appointment (ABD is acceptable).
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in civil engineering.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching, student mentorship, and professional service.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise or teaching experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Ability to teach courses such as soil mechanics, foundation engineering, geotechnical design, and other geotechnical-focused courses.
  • Expertise in a related area such as project management, transportation, or geology.
  • Prior teaching experience at the university level.
  • Professional engineering experience in civil or geotechnical engineering.
  • Active or prior registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (P.E.).
  • Experience with student advising, capstone design projects, student organizations, or industry engagement.
  • Familiarity with ABET assessment and continuous improvement processes.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in civil engineering, including courses in geotechnical engineering and related areas.
  • Contribute to the core civil engineering curriculum.
  • Develop and deliver effective, student-centered instruction.
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate students
  • Serve on graduate student committees
  • Support senior capstone design projects and student professional development.
  • Participate in curriculum assessment and continuous improvement activities, including ABET-related assessment.
  • Support student clubs and student-centric activities
  • Contribute to department, college, university, and professional service.
  • Support student recruitment, outreach, and engagement with industry partners.
  • Participate in department meetings and other activities that support the mission of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
