Lecturer of Architecture

Barnard College•New York City, NY

About The Position

Barnard College’s Architecture Department at Columbia University seeks a full-time Lecturer to teach undergraduate courses. This is an indefinitely renewable appointment beginning July 1, 2027, with teaching responsibilities during the standard academic year from September through May. The department offers an Architecture Major or Minor to students at Barnard College, Columbia College, Columbia School of General Studies, and Columbia Engineering. Full-time Lecturers teach six courses per year. Potential assignments include introductory and advanced architectural design studios required for the major or minor; architecture elective seminars; senior seminars or courses; and special-topics, workshop-based architecture electives. A typical one-year course load may include two 4.5-credit studios (each counted as two courses) and two seminars. The Chair determines exact instructional assignments and other academic responsibilities. Lecturers participate actively in the department through teaching, advising, student-facing or faculty forums, and public events, and contribute service at the departmental and college-wide levels. The position provides an opportunity for review and renewal in the third year and promotion to Senior Lecturer in the seventh year of service. Subsequent reviews and renewals occur on a seven-year cycle. Renewal considerations include teaching strengths, evidence of design and research work, and service to the department and college. Candidates should demonstrate distinctive expertise in architectural design and a strong interest in teaching design in a liberal arts setting. Applications must be submitted through Workday and include a CV and a combined PDF containing a cover letter, teaching statement, teaching dossier, and portfolio of design and research. Review is expected to begin around November 23, 2026, and may continue until the position is filled. The salary range is $88,000–$94,000.
