About The Position

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures within the College of Arts and Sciences seeks a Lecturer in Japanese Language and/or Literature. This is a 1-year appointment from August 15, 2026, through August 14, 2027. This position is posted as full-time; however, the appointment may range from 50% to 100% FTE depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications and the needs of the department. We seek candidates who can teach Japanese language at the undergraduate level (required) and, ideally, Japanese literature and culture courses (desired). Candidates who meet the language teaching requirement but do not have demonstrated ability to teach literature may be considered for a 50% appointment. Candidates with demonstrated ability to teach both Japanese language and literature may be considered for a full-time (100%) appointment. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate Japanese language courses and may also teach courses in Japanese literature and/or culture, depending on qualifications. Responsibilities include holding regular office hours, assessing and grading student work, and contributing to the instructional mission of the department.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Japanese language, literature, or a related field
  • Ability to teach Japanese language at the college level
  • Native or near-native fluency in both Japanese and English
