About The Position

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a passionate and innovative instructor in German to begin on July 1, 2026. This is a renewable fixed-term, non-tenure-track position in German with an initial one-year appointment. The successful candidate will teach five courses per year within the German language curriculum, including courses at the intermediate level, reading and translation courses, and other courses as needed. In all courses, teaching approaches and materials should foster an inclusive environment that welcomes and supports diverse people and ideas. In addition, the successful candidate will serve as the coordinator of the intermediate-level language sequence. This involves the setup of online learning platforms (Canvas), supervision and mentorship of graduate instructors throughout the academic year, conducting classroom observations, and preparing written observation reports. To offer a coherent and stimulating curriculum, the lecturer in German will work in close collaboration with the language program director whenever needed. The successful candidate will also be involved in extracurricular activities to attract students to the study of German.

Requirements

• Master's degree in German Studies, Applied Linguistics with a German focus, or a closely related field.
• Native or near-native (C1-C2) proficiency in German and English.
• Background in foreign language pedagogy or second language acquisition.
• Familiarity with German cultural studies and literature.
