About The Position

This position acts as the Lease Accountant for Property Management and consists of work in functional areas such as financial accounting, creating journal entries to record debts and associated assets in the University’s accounting system of record (Kuali) and the university property subsystem, use lease software to maintain a secondary system of accounting, monitor property-related financial activity accounted for in Kuali, analyze and interpret accounting activity for accuracy and completeness, train University Accountants, create and maintain central, written procedures for use by University Accountants, perform year end close, and summarize and report financial information from the accounting systems in accordance with accounting standards, statutes and regulations. This position is responsible for interpreting lease related GASB pronouncements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or Business Administration
  • 3+ years of Professional Accounting Experience
  • Ability to use and understand complex accounting theory
  • Excellent written communication skills as proven through application materials and experience
  • Experience with computer databases such as Microsoft Access or Oracle
  • Ability to be work independently
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires)

Responsibilities

  • Financial Accounting Provide support to the Manager of Property by facilitating the accounting, compliance, and reporting related to moveable and non-moveable equipment, including financed purchases. Confirm accounting information is properly reflected in both the University’s financial system of record, the university property subsystem, and in secondary lease software. Prepare and analyze monthly and annual reports and reconciliations for capital assets, financed purchases and lease agreements. Review and interpret financed purchase contracts and prepare entries, monthly reconciliations and reclassification of assets with title transfers when leases conclude. Prepare monthly reconciliations to ensure compliance with GASB and the CSU and State systems of record and work with University Accountants to make necessary adjustment. Complete annual financial statement worksheets and audit requests for the University’s State reporting exhibits, footnotes and financial statement work papers. Ensure that all journal entries, work papers, reports and work processes are thoroughly documented and that proper files are maintained in accordance with the University’s record retention policies.
  • Financial Compliance Ensure financial transactions are in compliance with GASB, University, State and Federal rules. Remain current on all lease and property related accounting policy changes issued by the GASB. Update and create financial procedures and manuals for Property Lease Accounting work process.
  • Reporting and Monitoring Create, maintain and run monthly and annual reports, respond to Federal Property Reporting requests and create ad hoc reports as needed, analyze reports to ensure proper compliance with the University Policies and Procedures and communicate recommendations to management on changes that need to take place.
  • Asset Management and Procedures Create Assets in the Capital Asset Management System that are acquired through lease financed purchases as well as right-to-use leases and maintain capital asset records to accurately reflect ownership. Support the Property department when complex sub-ledger issues or questions arise with asset management.
  • Other duties as assigned.
