About The Position

With direction from the Learning Zone Director, in a safe and secure environment that supports holistic learning, the Learning Zone OST Assistant Teacher will plan, prepare, and conduct all assigned educational and recreational activities. This role involves direct supervision of children, maintaining positive relationships with parents and staff, and assisting the Lead Teacher in implementing educational and recreational programs. The Assistant Teacher will work with individual students or small groups, aid in group activities, and attend to the physical needs of the children, being vigilant for signs of illness or accident-causing situations. Immediate written reporting of any accidents involving children or staff is required, in accordance with The Salvation Army and State of Ohio regulations. The position also requires assisting in the planning and implementation of fun, educational, and culturally relevant daily activities that promote self-esteem and meet Ohio state K-12 educational standards. Training and support for The Salvation Army’s KeepSAfe Child and Vulnerable Adult safety program, along with adherence to all reporting requirements, are essential. Additionally, the role requires completing The Salvation Army and State of Ohio Driver Training to operate Salvation Army vehicles, maintaining a valid State of Ohio Driver’s license, and completing annual BMV report requirements, with readiness to drive as needed. The Assistant Teacher must maintain a safe, nonjudgmental, and consistent environment, keep accurate records of attendance and child progress, provide input on academic assessments, and attend all Learning Zone meetings. Compliance with State of Ohio regulations for personal files is also necessary. The role may involve other duties assigned by the Learning Zone Director, Assistant Directors, or Area Coordinator, and requires upholding all policies of The Salvation Army, demonstrating care in upholding its mission statement, and representing the organization with professionalism.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or equivalent
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • As deemed necessary by the ODJFS for state licensing purposes.

Nice To Haves

  • A strong Salvation Army background is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Direct supervision and responsibility for children on a daily basis.
  • Maintain good working relationships with parents and other staff.
  • Assist the Lead Teacher of the class including implementing the education and recreational programs of the class.
  • Under direction and guidance from the lead teacher, work with individual students or small groups.
  • Aid other teachers and staff in group activities of early morning or late afternoon hours.
  • Attend to the physical needs of the children, being alert to any symptoms of illness, as well as careful prevention of accident-causing situations.
  • Immediately report any accident involving either a child or a staff member in writing as required by The Salvation Army and The State of Ohio.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of fun, educational, and culturally relevant daily activities that promote self-esteem and meet the Ohio state K-12 educational standards.
  • Complete training and support The Salvation Army’s KeepSAfe Child and Vulnerable Adult safety program and support all reporting requirements as required by The Salvation Army and State of Ohio.
  • Complete The Salvation Army and State of Ohio Driver Training as required to operate Salvation Army vehicles within the State of Ohio regulations for licensing, maintaining a valid State of Ohio Driver’s license and completing annual BMV report requirements. Be prepared to drive as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, nonjudgmental, and consistent environment.
  • Keep accurate records concerning attendance, child progress, and other information that may be required for reports and statistical information.
  • Give input on academic assessments on assigned students.
  • Attend all Learning Zone meetings.
  • Keep his/her own file in compliance with regulations established by the State of Ohio.
  • Uphold all policies of The Salvation Army and give the utmost care in upholding the philosophy as stated in its mission statement.
  • Represent The Salvation Army and its programs with a high degree of professionalism.
