Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy. Position Summary: This is the first level of the Relay Technician hierarchy. A Learner Relay Tech will assist a higher-level technician in activities associated with relay construction and maintenance. Incumbents are expected to develop intermediate skills and the ability to work with greater independence. A Transmission Relay Tech I will assist a higher level technician and sometimes safely lead a lower level technician in activities associated with relay construction and maintenance activities. Incumbents are expected to develop complex skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity.

  • Ability to pass any required background check for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance.
  • Must pass appropriate level of Duke aptitude test.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. for 100 feet.
  • Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology OR High School/GED AND two (2) or more years related work experience (for Learner Relay Tech).
  • Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology AND one (1) or more years related work experience OR High School/GED AND three (3) or more years related work experience (for Trans Relay Tech I).
  • Must have a permanent residence approximately forty-five minutes from their base location.
  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job.
  • This position is based out on North and South Carolina.
  • Must have the ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a higher-level technician in activities associated with relay construction and maintenance.
  • Develop intermediate skills and the ability to work with greater independence.
  • Assist a higher level technician and sometimes safely lead a lower level technician in activities associated with relay construction and maintenance activities.
  • Develop complex skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity.
  • Perform safe work practices and safety culture.
  • Understand the fundamentals of Human Performance Tools and requirements.
  • Understand the fundamentals of relaying, protective schemes, controls, alarms, distribution SCADA, communications.
  • Write basic isolation procedures.
  • Demonstrate good verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrate a firm grasp of print reading, red mark process.
  • Understand RTS and its use.
  • Understand ASPEN and reporting.
  • Complete understanding NERC compliance and importance for accurate data and timely completion.
  • Perform basic trouble shooting skills.
  • Develop the ability to think methodically and arrange activities in logical order.
  • Gain basic understanding of CT and VT circuits.
  • Gain exposure to Carrier and Tone equipment.
