About The Position

The Leadman, HVAC is responsible for coordinating, instructing, and overseeing the work of air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics, water treatment personnel, and other assigned trades employees. This role involves performing skilled maintenance and repair of air conditioning units (1-800 tons), commercial refrigeration, freezers, water coolers, and control systems. The position requires working from job orders, determining necessary materials, ordering from stockroom if needed, and completing repairs efficiently. Emergency calls dispatched via radio must also be handled. The Leadman will read blueprints and technical data, prepare material estimates, instruct other mechanics on proper repair procedures, and follow both written and oral instructions. Participation in training programs to enhance skills is expected, along with completing all projects in a journeyman manner and accurately recording time and materials. The role also includes operating a School Board vehicle safely, performing duties requiring significant physical effort (climbing, lifting over 60 pounds, pulling), staying current with technical developments, ensuring adherence to safety procedures, and following all federal, state, and School Board policies.

Requirements

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • Seven (7) years of recent experience in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning.
  • Satisfactory completion of The State of Florida Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Apprenticeship Program OR Broward County Jouneyman Certificate of Competency in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration OR Must pass tests appropriate to certify and demonstrate competency in the job.
  • Computer skills as required for the position.
  • Must provide own hand tools.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical and air conditioning circuits.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all phases of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration repair to include proper procedure of the trade.
  • Must have a proper Florida commercial driver's license with endorsements compatible with the assigned duties of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
  • This position will include pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

  • Complete repairs as expeditiously as possible.
  • Receive and complete emergency calls dispatched over the radio.
  • Read blueprints, technical data and sketches; prepare estimates of materials from such information.
  • Assume responsibility and instruct other mechanics in the proper procedures to accomplish repairs.
  • Follow both written and oral instructions.
  • Work well with others.
  • Participate, successfully, in the training programs offered to increase the individual's skill and proficiency related to the assignments.
  • Complete all projects in a journeyman manner and ensure proper recording of time and materials.
  • Operate School Board owned vehicle in a safe manner and assume responsibility for all supplies and equipment on the vehicle.
  • Perform all duties which require extensive physical effort such as climbing, lifting over 60 pounds, pulling, etc.
  • Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.
  • Ensure adherence to good safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties required by the director/ supervisor/manager/foreman.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies.
