About The Position

This is a part-time position in the Parks & Recreation Department, working with the Valley Park Summer Day Camp and P.A.R.K. After School Program. The role involves providing supervised transportation, overseeing daily participant check-in/check-out, organizing and implementing activities for children aged 6-12, and ensuring participant safety. The Lead Youth Programs Counselor will also serve as a point of contact for parents and guardians, providing feedback on their child's progress and program activities. Responsibilities include responding to emergencies, maintaining program safety, and attending/co-leading counselor meetings and trainings.

Requirements

  • Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from high school
  • Previous experience working with children and youth
  • Supervisory experience including effective training practices for new employees
  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervised transportation of children to program sites within the city and off-site excursions
  • Set-up, oversee, and assist as needed with daily participant check-in and check-out
  • Assist with organizing and implementing homework time, arts and crafts, physically active games, and other creative activities for participants ranging from 6-12 years old
  • Arrange and provide appropriate snacks or meals when applicable
  • Responsible for direct supervision and safety of participants
  • Communicate effectively with peers and supervisory staff
  • Serve as the direct point of contact to the Youth Programs Counselors, participants and parents when the Recreation Coordinator is off-site and involve the Youth Programs Coordinator as needed
  • Provide parents/guardians with daily verbal or written feedback on their child and program activities
  • Be attentive to participant and parent concerns
  • Maintain the safety of programs; respond to emergency situations and complete appropriate forms
  • Attend and co-lead all counselor meetings and trainings
