The Lead Wastewater Operator is responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant facility.

Requirements

  • Requires high school diploma or GED and one year of college or specialized vocational training in chemistry, wastewater treatment, or a related field.
  • Five years of wastewater treatment operations experience and maximum certification as a Wastewater Operator preferred.
  • Must have a valid state driver’s license and meet minimum driving standards.
  • Knowledge of Professional wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory analysis techniques and principles.
  • Knowledge of Safety practices and equipment.
  • Skill in Handling equipment with moderate latitude for judgment, such as pumps, mixers, blowers, or laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to Prepare routine records and logs.
  • Ability to Perform mathematical computations.
  • Ability to Visually discern color variations.
  • Ability to Work shift schedules and respond to coverage/emergencies.
  • Ability to Work emergency duty during non-scheduled hours.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement programs within organizational policies; report major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.
  • Supervise staff, including training and providing for technical or professional development, selecting or recommending selection, assigning and evaluating work, counseling, disciplining, and terminating or recommending termination.
  • Plan departmental activities and reprioritize throughout the day to resolve maintenance problems requiring immediate attention; ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Oversee performance of sample collection and testing (e.g., MLSS, pH, DO); analyze results and make process control changes.
  • Document readings, test results, and equipment adjustments; maintain records in computer database and prepare required reports.
  • Monitor treatment process, inspect equipment, and ensure operational efficiency and compliance with discharge permits.
  • Develop and manage departmental budget and review/approve expenditures.
  • Coordinate construction, repair, and maintenance with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain records, process reports, memos, requisitions, and personnel documents.
  • Gather and maintain data to support reporting requirements.
  • Attend and conduct meetings, participate in training, and maintain compliance with safety standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
