About The Position

RTX is seeking a skilled, detail-oriented Principal Software Test Engineer to design, implement, and execute tests for the Patriot Software Team in Huntsville, Alabama. The Patriot team is developing software to support new capabilities for the air defense system. The engineer works closely with software developers, system architects, product leads, and other groups to ensure delivered solutions meet customer requirements. The role leads software testing efforts, develops test plans and objectives, designs and executes manual and automated test cases, and analyzes and documents results against requirements. Testing is primarily manual and data-intensive and takes place in an onsite lab. The position requires onsite presence and extensive interaction with Systems Design Engineering and the Software Development Team. Light travel may be required. An active and transferable U.S. government-issued security clearance is required before starting; the posting also requires the ability to obtain an interim clearance before the start date. U.S. citizenship is required.

Requirements

Typically, a bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and at least 8 years of experience, unless prohibited by local laws or regulations.
Experience with software engineering.
Experience in validation, verification, requirements analysis, and/or testing.
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government-issued Secret security clearance; the posting states an active and transferable clearance is required prior to start and that an interim clearance must be obtainable before the start date.
U.S. citizenship, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Experience applying Earned Value Management principles.
Knowledge of software testing methodologies and best practices, including functional, integration, regression, and performance testing.
Experience with DOORS (Dynamic Object-Oriented Requirements System) or another requirements traceability tool.
Experience with bug-tracking and test-management tools.
Exceptional attention to detail for identifying and documenting anomalies or inconsistencies in software performance.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for diagnosing and addressing issues.
Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting defects, progress, and test results to stakeholders.
Leadership experience in a testing environment, including developing test plans, providing status updates, and guiding technical teams.
Experience creating detailed test plans and leading test efforts for complex projects.

Responsibilities

Mentor and support junior engineers through expertise-sharing and training.
Collaborate with developers, system architects, and cross-functional teams to support software integration and functionality.
Communicate testing progress, issues, and risks to stakeholders and leadership.
Analyze software requirements for clarity, completeness, and testability.
Define clear test objectives that guide the testing process and provide thorough coverage.
Design manual and automated test cases based on test objectives.
Execute tests of new and modified software in the onsite lab environment.
Analyze test results against specified requirements and document discrepancies.
