About The Position

The Lead Unit Design Engineer is part of the Engineered Solutions group and leads all engineering activities associated with new unit design within Hayward Tyler, and more. The position requires someone who is organized, focused on continuous improvement, and enjoys a fast-paced work environment where difficult problems may need simple or complex solutions. Someone who is successful in this role will have a strong technical engineering background, experience with rotating equipment, and can lead and supervise a group of 1-6 engineers. They will be comfortable working with other areas of the business, such as quality, supply chain, and manufacturing, to ensure a seamless rollout of new unit designs from clean sheet through shipping, and beyond. The Design Engineering function supports business needs and continuous improvement efforts through appropriate technical product and engineering principal development of employees and management.

Requirements

  • BSME or similar, and 5-10 years of mechanical engineering design and analysis in the field of industrial rotating machinery such as pumps, turbines, or compressors, or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with leadership, initiative, and mentoring.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct stress analysis and other design calculations using manual or digital techniques.
  • Comfortable authoring, reading & interpreting engineering drawings, and familiar with ASME Y14.5.
  • Comfortable and competent reading and interpreting contract technical specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience with engineering design codes, practices, and processes.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code; Section VIII or Section III preferred.
  • Able to interpret function and intent of existing designs and modify them for new applications.
  • Comprehensive understanding of engineering aspects of the design, analysis, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and operation of centrifugal pumps.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks, MathCad, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the Internet.
  • Detail oriented, strategic, organized, works independently, guides and directs reports, and highly motivated.
  • Professional Engineer registration or ability to gain registration.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ANSYS, ARMD, CFTurbo, or other specialized software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overall new unit design, including engineering and mechanical design, design risk identification and mitigation, material selection, compliance to company and contract specific design Codes and standards, and all other activities associated with new unit design from an Engineering perspective.
  • Create and maintain engineering schedules, produce progress reports, assist Quality, Supply Chain, and Operations, and supervise, develop and review reporting employees.
  • Collaborate with Technical and Functional Managers to recommend appropriate mechanical design strategies for conceptual and product development, task and priority determination, setting deadlines, and assuring that business and contract goals are met.
  • Supervise reporting Engineers and other employees, ensuring they correctly translate contract design specifications and standards into manufacturing drawings, contract submittmits, bills of material, procedures, tests, analytical reports, and other products necessary for successful completion of the contract.
  • Identify and set development plans for reporting employees, including mentoring and training courses.
  • Supervise, perform, and check calculations and analysis required for new unit design.
  • Supervise or perform the writing of test plans, test loop design, unit testing, and other contract specific design validation activities.
  • Work closely with other disciplines at Hayward Tyler as required in the performance of design activities.
  • Perform self-checks of completed work, develop self-confidence, and mentor, counsel and provide guidance to peers and reports.
  • Promote in-house mechanical design excellence by developing design and analysis tools, processes, techniques, and process improvement.
  • Utilize in-house or contract subject matter experts for electrical, hydraulic, or other areas related to new unit design.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews and other engineering design process related activities.
  • Approve time off, schedules, overtime, and timecards for reports, as required.
  • Conduct and perform annual reviews.
  • Ensure all Hayward Tyler Quality Program training is up to date.
  • Provide resources, supervision, or support for areas outside of traditional Engineering, including Application and Aftermarket Sales, Service, Manufacturing, and Quality.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to other engineers, contracts, or areas of the business.
  • Perform other duties as required.
