About The Position
This role is for a Lead Transmission Line Engineer responsible for designing transmission lines in the 69kV to 765kV range. The position involves mentoring junior engineers, coordinating design activities to ensure compliance with specifications and client requirements, and preparing technical reports and studies. The engineer will also perform independent reviews of calculations, drawings, and transmission line models using PLS-CADD, and adhere to Sargent & Lundy's System of Processes. The role emphasizes leadership in utilizing modern tools like automation and AI to enhance workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs. Leaders are expected to direct automation and process-improvement work, including automating calculations, summarizing documents, generating design documentation, and guiding the use of AI tools while ensuring results are checked. Oversight of engineers who program or script for task automation is valued, as is additional learning in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields.
Requirements
- BS degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
- 12 or more years of transmission design experience.
- Proficiency with PLS-CADD software.
- Experience must include preparation of scopes of work, development of conceptual designs, determination of design basis, the selection of equipment and materials, and the preparation and assembling of calculations and specifications.
- Experience working directly with clients on transmission lines from 69kV through 500kV.
- Knowledge of engineering standards including NESC, IEC, ASCE, ACI, IEEE and ANSI.
- Experience reviewing design drawings created by others.

Responsibilities
- Design transmission lines in the 69kV to 765kV range.
- Mentor and train less experienced design team members.
- Coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
- Prepare reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner and meet client requirements and S&L formats.
- Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations, drawing preparation, and transmission line models based in PLS-CADD.
- Adhere to Sargent & Lundy's System of Processes.
- Lead others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
- Direct automation and process-improvement work, for example, how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation and guiding when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked.
- Oversee engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.
