About The Position

As a world leader in creating comfortable, sustainable, and efficient climate solutions for buildings, homes and transportation, Trane Technologies is committed to putting the planet first. Sustainability is central to our business. We are seeking a Lead Thermal Systems Engineer to join our Thermal Systems team. This role is responsible for concept development, design, and design verification of heat exchanger and fluid flow components for global refrigeration products. These components include round tube plate fin (RTPF) and micro-channel (MCHE) coils, brazed plate heat exchangers (BPHE), and shell & tube refrigerant evaporators and condensers for commercial HVAC products. The ideal candidate will be creative and innovative, utilizing design tools to develop and implement new heat transfer components that increase efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This role also involves mentoring other engineers in heat exchanger design and development to enhance our product offerings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and at least 10 years of HVAC or heat exchanger work experience is required.
  • Fundamental knowledge of vapor compression HVAC technologies and components using various high, medium, and low-pressure HCFC, HFC, and HFO refrigerants.
  • Knowledge of single and two-phase fluid flow as it relates to the design of air-to-refrigerant or water-to-refrigerant evaporators and condensers, and the ability to develop physical-based models of their performance.
  • Knowledge of the design, performance prediction, and cost analysis process for air-to-refrigerant or water-to-refrigerant heat exchangers applied to the process of refrigerant evaporation and condensation.
  • Good understanding of the application of computer simulation tools and theory to HVAC system design.
  • Quality and customer service orientation towards engineering design.
  • Ability to understand, condense, and organize information necessary to make engineering decisions quickly and efficiently.
  • Resilient team player with the dual ability to work as a team player or a team leader.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others both written and orally.
  • Self-starter with a high energy level and a high commitment to career.
  • Ability to make progress by producing deliverables and completing projects in a multi-tasking environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer or Master’s Degree in Engineering is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead new technology, productivity, and new product development projects to design new products or components and improve the function, reliability, or cost of existing products and components.
  • Own process and tool development to support design and integration of new heat exchange components within our Commercial HVAC product lines.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for heat exchangers and participate in technical design reviews outside of project assignments.
  • Drive modeling process improvements for performance and reliability to improve accuracy and speed, enabling reduced testing requirements.
  • Organize laboratory tests and data analysis to support product design and verification.
  • Work with suppliers to obtain component designs that meet product requirements.
  • Lead ad hoc teams of engineers and others through short-duration projects to support product and technology roadmaps for heat exchangers.
  • Work effectively across functional lines (development, production, design, marketing, suppliers).
