About The Position

The Lead Teacher - Head Start is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing an educational program that meets the academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students. This role provides guidance to teacher's aides and volunteers, and collaborates with the Head Start Management Team and families to ensure a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment. The Lead Teacher oversees, delegates, and monitors classroom operations and family/community outreach on a day-to-day basis in accordance with the Head Start Program Performance Standards.

  • Familiarity with Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures.
  • Associate’s Degree in Child Development, Early Education or closely related.
  • Child Development Credential (CDA).
  • Two years related experience.
  • Must be 21 years of age with a Valid Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining working knowledge of Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS) and applicable State of Alaska regulations specific to early childhood programming.
  • Supervising and monitoring children; responding appropriately to crisis or emergency situations.
  • Developing and maintaining a positive classroom environment for children, families, and staff.
  • Ensuring the development and implementation of on-going child assessments, individualized learning plans, and, if needed, positive behavior plans, with Child Development Coordinator guidance.
  • Working with school district, public health, and/or community service agencies to ensure child services meet HSPPS compliance.
  • Developing, submitting, and leading weekly lesson plans that incorporate the Early Learning Outcomes Framework and designated curriculum.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of families and program information.
  • Utilizing Child Plus and Teaching Strategies Gold (TSG) to ensure all required assessments and documentation are accurate, complete, and routinely updated.
  • Delegating the recruitment of parent committee members, policy council members, and substitutes to teaching team members.
  • Monitoring and reporting child abuse concerns to the appropriate authority.
  • Working with Mentor Coach in creating professional development plans and attending trainings throughout the school year.
  • Documenting all family contacts, family visits, and parent/teacher conferences.
  • Providing an environment that promotes and reinforces family/community engagement.
  • Supporting families’ goals toward health, safety, financial stability, and aspirations.
  • Working with the Food Service Coordinator to ensure sanitary food preparation, food storage, and clean-up in accordance with Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines.
  • Providing family style meals and snacks (as appropriate).
  • Completing 15-hours of ECE professional development per school year.
  • Encouraging and co-creating a positive work environment.
  • Working with the team to ensure general maintenance and janitorial duties are shared and completed.
  • Purchasing supplies as needed and ensuring accurate inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Supervising two to four teaching staff, volunteers, and parents in the classroom.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
