Lead Systems Engineering Architect

Google•Sunnyvale, CA
•$171,000 - $247,000

About The Position

The Data Center Engineering team develops the physical designs of data centers, testing new strategies and improving how facilities use power and operate. The role involves developing infrastructure improvements, ensuring compliance with codes and standards, communicating recommendations to senior-level executives, and driving implementation with facilities technicians. As the primary physical and infrastructure integration anchor for next-generation, ultra-high-density AI/ML accelerator platforms, including TPUs and GPUs, this role translates compute hardware roadmaps into facility-level architectures. It defines physical row topologies, high-power busway systems, power tap interfaces, and direct liquid-cooling handoffs for large-scale machine learning clusters. The architect guides infrastructure designs from early hardware co-development through schematic layouts and modular engineering blueprints, partnering with compute hardware engineering, thermal and mechanical specialists, and external Architectural and Engineering partners. The stated US compensation range is $171,000–$247,000, plus a 20% bonus target, equity, and benefits. Individual pay depends on job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of experience in mission-critical facility design and construction environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Business, or another relevant field, or a professional engineering license, including a Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Experience in estimating, electrical design, operation, and commissioning of substations, switchgear, ATP/ATS, emergency power systems and their control systems, power monitoring, and electrical protection.
  • Experience designing, constructing, and commissioning high-voltage substations, medium- or low-voltage electrical distribution systems, AC/DC systems, and associated power management or SCADA tools.
  • Experience working with data center equipment and environments, such as switchgear, generators, transformers, controls, security monitoring systems, and fire safety systems.
  • Experience with medium-voltage systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and own comprehensive data center facility designs, system-level specifications, and physical and electrical topology plans from concept through detailed design.
  • Formulate multi-generation infrastructure evolution roadmaps addressing power growth, accelerated deployment timelines, and sustainability goals.
  • Lead end-to-end physical infrastructure integration for ultra-high-density AI/ML platforms, including high-power busways, power taps, and direct liquid-cooling handoffs.
  • Author cross-disciplinary Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and Form, Fit, and Function (FFF) standards to ensure modular interoperability across building blocks, power systems, and rack designs.
  • Direct outside Architectural and Engineering consultants and synthesize requirements from Platforms, Networking, SRE, and Construction into buildable data hall designs.
  • Ensure compliance with codes and standards, develop infrastructure improvements, communicate recommendations to senior-level executives, and drive implementation alongside facilities technicians.
