About The Position

Bristol Health Medical Group is seeking a Lead Physician Assistant to join the Department of Surgery at Bristol Hospital. The position combines clinical care for surgical patients with supervision and coordination of the surgical Physician Assistant program. The department provides services in general, colorectal, vascular, breast, gynecologic, plastic, and thoracic surgery. The Lead PA coordinates schedules, assignments, coverage, recruitment, onboarding, training, and development for the surgical PA group; serves as a liaison among administration, operating room management, physicians, and PAs; and supports quality, productivity, and revenue capture. Clinical work includes pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative care, surgical consultations, and first assisting. The role also involves documentation, compliance, quality improvement, education, and participation in hospital activities and committees.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited Physician Associate program.
Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
Valid Connecticut medical license.
Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration.
Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Certification.
Meet the standards and requirements for Adjunct Medical Staff membership as defined in the Hospital’s Medical Staff Bylaws.

Responsibilities

Supervise and coordinate the surgical Physician Assistant program.
Manage PA working-hour, on-call, holiday, and PTO schedules; coordinate daily assignments and communicate schedule changes.
Coordinate with operating room supervisory staff to ensure coverage as patient volume or case numbers change.
Provide monthly PA schedules to the Medical Staff Office, BHMSG, and Operating Room, and promptly report changes.
Maintain employee records and work schedules; approve and schedule vacation and other planned time off.
Support recruitment, development, and retention of PAs, and assist with disciplinary matters.
Serve as a liaison among administration, operating room management, physicians, and physician assistants.
Provide performance feedback to supervisors and serve as a role model for quality and professionalism.
Ensure productivity and revenue capture in conjunction with Bristol Hospital and BHMSG leadership.
Develop and implement onboarding for new PAs; arrange didactic and clinical experiences; help create training protocols and documents and ensure adequate training.
Document pertinent patient data and clinical care accurately in approved forms or EMR software, completing medical records within 24 hours of care.
Evaluate consultation and nursing requests promptly, consult with physicians as appropriate, and report to the Supervising Physician on an agreed schedule.
Develop a weekly work schedule in cooperation with the Supervising Physician and undertake advanced procedures described in privilege documents.
Prepare patient medical records and reports, claims, and correspondence related to professional services.
Assist with and participate in surveys by regulatory and accrediting agencies, including the Joint Commission.
Participate in peer review, quality improvement, clinical guideline development, care management, and quality assurance activities.
Comply with BHMSG and Hospital compliance programs, including billing and coding requirements, and complete billing slips and coding accurately and promptly.
Participate in employer and hospital educational programs, use CPOE, attend scheduled professional meetings, and serve on committees as requested.
Provide pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative care, including entering orders and first assisting.
Perform pre-operative histories and physicals and educate surgical patients.
Coordinate inpatient and outpatient care to optimize patient care and resource utilization.
Coordinate and facilitate patient discharge.
Provide a pro rata share of operating room surgical-assist call coverage with the other surgical physician assistants.
