About The Position

The Lead Surgical Assistant supports surgeons during surgical procedures by anticipating the needs of the surgical team, ensuring a sterile environment, and providing mentorship to other surgical assistants. They provide expert assistance in complex surgeries and contribute to the overall coordination and efficiency of the operating room.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a surgical assistant, with a proven track record stepping up as a leader.
  • Proficient in surgical techniques and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make quick, effective decisions.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining a sterile environment and adhering to safety protocols.
  • Positive attitude, change advocate, able to lead by example

Responsibilities

  • Take panoramic x-rays & 3D scans.
  • Ensure anesthesia prep has been successfully completed.
  • Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ensure all equipment is functioning correctly before procedures.
  • Verify patient identity, surgical site, and procedure with the surgical team.
  • Assist in positioning patients for surgery.
  • Assist the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during surgery.
  • Maintain a sterile field throughout the procedure.
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and have necessary instruments ready.
  • Monitor the patient’s vital signs.
  • Explain post-operative care to patients.
  • Apply dressings to surgical wounds.
  • Assist in transferring patients to the recovery room.
  • Train junior surgical assistants and support staff.
  • Answer questions and mentor the surgical team.
  • As needed, assist in managing the schedule of the surgical team.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, safety regulations, and infection control protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, patient information, and equipment use.
  • Participate in clinical team meetings and contribute to the improvement of clinical services.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless patient care.
