About The Position

The Substation Lead Design Engineer will join our team in supporting Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) power delivery projects throughout Northern California. Dedicated to our core values of safety, innovation, and collaboration, the Substation Lead Design Engineer will lead high-voltage substation designs (4kV to 500kV). This role acts as a vital link between the firm and the client, ensuring that complex engineering deliverables—ranging from physical layouts to Protection & Control (P&C) activities—conform to both industry standards and PG&E-specific utility requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET approved college or university.
  • 8+ years of experience working in substation design or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer’s License in Electrical Engineering strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading a team of engineers and designers designing substation projects.
  • Direct experience with designing substations for Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E).

Responsibilities

  • Lead and collaborate on substation physical design and P&C activities, including general arrangement drawings, relay house layouts, above/below-grade conduit, and grounding drawings.
  • Execute E2’s robust Quality Management System by performing rigorous technical reviews and ensuring all designs meet client expectations before final submission.
  • Communicate project activities effectively with Project Managers and client stakeholders to ensure "Issue for Construction" (IFC) packages are delivered on time and within purpose.
  • Ensure all engineering plans comply with PG&E standards, CPUC requirements, and NESC/IEEE codes.
  • Participate in job site meetings and site walks to gather scope information and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) during construction phases.
  • Train, develop, and mentor junior engineering staff, providing technical expertise to solve complex engineering problems.
