About The Position

The Research Foundation of The City University of New York (RFCUNY) is seeking a Lead STEAM Academy Teacher for the HOPE Program at Hostos Community College. This role involves instructing students in grades K-7 in STEM subjects within small class sizes (under 12 students). The teacher will develop and implement instructional plans, prepare materials, utilize various teaching methods, and assist with assessment tools. The HOPE Program is a Two-Generation (2Gen) summer program for student parents and their children, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The program runs from June 29 to July 29, with additional paid preparation and training time. The program's model offers holistic support including family services, education, and professionalism development.

Requirements

  • A degree in elementary education or early childhood education (2-year degrees will be considered).
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with elementary children in a summer program and/or educational setting OR a minimum of two years working with K-12 kids.
  • Ability to plan and organize instruction.
  • Ability to develop and utilize supporting instructional materials.
  • Ability to respond effectively to feedback and adjust teaching strategies and materials in order to motivate students and to respond to student needs.
  • Ability to deliver instruction effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to listen and respond effectively to sponsor concerns and interests.
  • Ability to work and teach independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage the classroom environment, including in off-site locations.
  • Appreciation and support of the diversity and varying learning styles.

Responsibilities

  • Provides instruction in STEM to students in grades K-7 in groups of varying sizes.
  • Conducts classes individually or as part of an instructional team.
  • Develops instructional plans and prepares instructional materials following curricula guidelines.
  • Uses and incorporates prescribed materials as requested.
  • Prepares and follows a schedule.
  • Communicates with parents.
  • Utilizes traditional as well as state-of-the-art delivery methods.
  • Assists in developing and administering assessment tools.
  • Works with the HOPE Assessment Coordinator.
  • Other duties as assigned.
