About The Position

The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) has an opening for a Lead Stationary Engineer for the Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH) Power Plant in Middletown. This role involves leading daily plant operations, supervising staff, and ensuring the continuous functioning of heating, cooling, and related mechanical systems. Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of steam heating and generating equipment.
  • One (1) year of the General Experience must have included the independent performance of the full range of tasks involved in the operation, maintenance and repair of steam heating and generating equipment.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to operate, maintain, inspect and make running repairs to boiler and engine room, generating and related mechanical equipment
  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain building utility equipment including power, light, water, steam and plumbing lines

Responsibilities

  • Leads daily plant operations by planning workflow, setting priorities, and ensuring continuous functioning of heating, cooling, and related mechanical systems
  • Supervises and supports staff through scheduling, work review, training, and participation in performance evaluations
  • Maintains safe and efficient plant procedures, including water treatment, routine testing, and compliance with operational standards
  • Coordinates with internal units, agencies, and vendors; may prepare budgets, reports, and recommendations for equipment or repairs
  • Performs and oversees maintenance and minor repairs, including steam trap inspections and safe removal of pipe insulation
  • Plans plant workflow and determines priorities
  • Schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews work involved in the operation, maintenance and repair of heating, generating, hot water and refrigeration equipment and possibly such related or allied equipment as used in electrical distribution, laundry, fire fighting, and sewage disposal for the purpose of ensuring continuous operation
  • Establishes and maintains plant procedures
  • Provides staff training and assistance
  • Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations
  • Acts as liaison with operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures
  • Adds water treatment chemicals to boilers
  • Performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks
  • May make recommendations on policies or standards
  • May prepare reports and correspondence
  • May prepare budgets and make recommendations as to equipment purchases or contractual repairs
  • May act as the Supervising Stationary Engineer in their absence
  • May inspect and repair steam traps fed by main system at various locations
  • May remove pipe insulation materials associated with the repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods
