About The Position

The Boeing Company's Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) is seeking a Lead Software Systems Engineer to join the Evolved Strategic Satcom (ESS) Software Engineering team in Seal Beach, CA. The ESS program is a vital component of the U.S. military’s nuclear command, control, and communications (NC3) network, ensuring nuclear-survivable connectivity. The team specializes in developing software tools and services for advanced satellite and ground systems. This role provides an opportunity to work in a dynamic, fast-paced development environment utilizing modern, scalable technologies and tools. The team operates within an Agile and CI/CD framework, incorporating automated testing, vulnerability scanning, and quality scanning capabilities. The ideal candidate will possess extensive software ecosystem experience, a strong project background, sound judgment, and the ability to engineer innovative solutions and capabilities. Critical thinking and troubleshooting skills are paramount for success in this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or higher
  • 5+ years’ experience with software development for space systems and ground segments performing command, control, mission planning and data processing
  • 5+ years of development experience using Python
  • 3+ years’ experience with JavaScript (e.g., Angular, JQuery)
  • 3+ years’ experience working with TypeScript
  • Active U.S. Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)
  • Must satisfy the Company's Conflict of Interest (COI) assessment process.
  • Must meet U.S. export control compliance requirements. A “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.62 is required. “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science and 9+ years of related work experience OR Bachelor’s Degree and 13+ years of directly related work experience OR 17+ years of related, relevant experience
  • 5+ years of progressive leadership experience in software development, utilizing modern methodologies on government programs
  • 5+ years’ experience with designing and developing intuitive user interfaces featuring real-time, 2D/3D geospatial visualization
  • 5+ years’ experience in the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, coding, integration, and test
  • 5+ years’ experience with database technologies (Postgres, SQL/NoSQL)
  • 3+ years’ experience with Java and FastAPI (Python API) languages
  • In-depth knowledge of Command and Control (C2) systems, mission planning, ground systems, and real-time application requirements
  • Strong experience using CI/CD pipelines, automate testing, builds, and deployment workflows

Responsibilities

  • Leads, develops and maintains requirements, architecture, algorithms, interfaces, and designs for high-performance APIs between front-end and back-end software services
  • Leads support software development activities in an Agile environment using DevSecOps methodologies, including integration of completed software components into a fully functional software system
  • Leads the development of critical features and take ownership of the full development lifecycle from design through deployment
  • Builds, architects, and consumes APIs and backend services as part of the platform ecosystem, with an emphasis on automation, testing, and security
  • Leads code reviews to maintain code quality, enforce best practices, and ensure compliance with established standards
  • Leads the creation and translation of design mockups into functional, visually appealing user interfaces using modern front-end frameworks and technologies
  • Advocates for improvements to product quality, security, and performance that positively impact the team and broader organization
  • Works effectively in ambiguous environments, provide mentoring, leadership to team and self-direct work as needed
