About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a skilled and motivated Software Engineer to join its Space Systems team. This hands-on, on-site role contributes to software solutions supporting organizational objectives and the integration, test, verification, and operational readiness of customer-deliverable products. The position involves close collaboration with a multidisciplinary engineering team and is suited to someone with software engineering experience in space, defense, or other complex, mission-critical environments. The role covers the full software development lifecycle, from understanding mission needs and defining requirements and designs through implementation, integration, and testing. Software is developed and maintained across Windows and Linux platforms using languages including C++, C, XML, and Python. The engineer also supports hardware integration and test, resolves software defects and performance issues, and applies software engineering and DevOps practices, automation, reuse, and emerging AI-enabled tools. The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 9 years of prior relevant experience; or a graduate degree and at least 7 years of prior related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 13 years of prior related experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience in one or more programming languages such as C++, Python, or similar.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Atlassian tools (JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket) or similar configuration management and defect-tracking tools.
  • Working knowledge of Agile methodologies, including Scrum practices, team facilitation, and backlog management.
  • Experience with DevOps tools and technologies for virtualization and automation, such as Docker, Jenkins, CMake, git/Bitbucket, or Artifactory.
  • Experience with object-oriented software architecture and design.
  • Experience using AI-assisted and agentic software development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, or Claude Code, for software design, implementation, debugging, testing, code review, and engineering productivity.
  • Experience with SQL, NoSQL, POSTGRES, Elasticsearch, or equivalent database infrastructures.
  • Experience with drivers and hardware interfaces, including PCIe, 1553, RS232, FPGAs, and other unique hardware.
  • Knowledge of UML diagrams, such as class, component, state, and sequence diagrams.
  • Experience with space hardware test methodologies and operations.
  • Familiarity with the full software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Experience in software integration and test, with strong software development and troubleshooting skills.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle to create software used to integrate and test complex customer-deliverable hardware.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to understand mission needs and define, document, and refine software requirements and designs.
  • Design, implement, review, integrate, and test software using languages including C++, C, XML, and Python across Windows and Linux platforms.
  • Support hardware integration and test activities, including software troubleshooting, defect resolution, performance improvement, and technical problem-solving.
  • Apply software engineering best practices and established DevOps processes to deliver efficient, reliable, and maintainable solutions.
  • Use automation, software reuse, and emerging AI-enabled development tools to improve productivity, quality, and long-term software reliability.
