About The Position

As a Lead Software Engineer within JP Morgan Chase’s Cybersecurity and Technology Controls line of business, you will contribute to an agile team that builds and delivers secure, stable, scalable technology products. The role combines software engineering, DevOps, and cloud engineering, supporting business objectives across multiple technical areas. The technology environment evolves frequently, so the engineer is expected to learn new services quickly and automate wherever possible. The position focuses on developing production software and cloud implementations, operating and improving a cloud-based orchestration platform, and building automated compliance and delivery capabilities. You will establish quality gates through automated testing, help improve operational stability, and create tools that enable environment owners to diagnose and resolve production health issues. The role also includes providing technical direction, mentoring engineers, leading communities of practice, and guiding teams in effective, validated use of enterprise-authorized AI-assisted engineering tools.

Requirements

  • Formal training or certification in software engineering concepts and at least 5 years of applied experience.
  • Hands-on experience delivering system design, application development, testing, and operational stability.
  • Advanced proficiency in one or more of Java, Python, or Go.
  • Proficiency across the Software Development Life Cycle.
  • Practical cloud-native experience.
  • Expertise with AWS infrastructure, including networking, EC2, Lambda, serverless solutions, VPC, Route 53, auto scaling, Transit Gateway, API Gateway, Step Functions, Secrets Manager, storage services, and containers such as EKS, ECS, and Fargate.
  • Proficiency in networking, public cloud architecture, and Infrastructure as Code, with hands-on Terraform experience.
  • Expertise designing and developing complex cloud architectures, deploying scalable solutions, and applying DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, application resiliency, and issue triage.
  • Testing proficiency from unit through end-to-end testing, using tools such as Cucumber, JUnit 5 or pytest, JMeter, and Gremlin.
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Demonstrated experience leading effective use of approved AI-assisted software development tools, with the ability to set team expectations for validating AI outputs for correctness, performance, and security.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing, deploying, and operating production workloads on AWS with Terraform, including reusable modules, state management, and multi-environment deployments.
  • Experience using AI-assisted software development tools such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot for coding, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience in microservice and API development, with working proficiency in both Python and Java.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Splunk, Grafana, or Dynatrace, and data streaming platforms such as Kafka.
  • AWS certification, such as Solutions Architect, Developer, or DevOps Engineer.
  • Knowledge of the financial services industry or another regulated environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and troubleshoot creative software solutions, including breaking down technical problems beyond routine approaches.
  • Develop secure, high-quality production code and review and debug code written by others.
  • Lead adoption of enterprise-authorized AI-assisted engineering practices, establishing validation standards for security, correctness, performance, peer review, and automated testing.
  • Use software development lifecycle tools, including approved AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to improve the value of automation.
  • Identify opportunities to eliminate recurring issues or automate their remediation to improve application and system stability.
  • Use DevOps tools to build, deploy, and operate a cloud-based orchestration platform, infrastructure as code, and automated compliance capabilities.
  • Lead the design and development of cloud implementations, including end-to-end automation, architecture, performance and monitoring, proofs of concept, and transition to operations.
  • Create automated functional, performance, resiliency, and end-to-end tests and make them required pipeline quality gates.
  • Provide technical guidance to the business and technical teams, mentor engineers, and lead Software Engineering communities of practice.
  • Learn new technologies and services quickly and deliver production-ready work with minimal ramp-up.
  • Build tooling that enables environment owners to diagnose production environment health issues and resolve them themselves.
