Lead Software Engineer-Marketing Technology

About The Position

AAPC is seeking a hands-on lead software engineer to build and evolve customer-facing digital products, e-commerce experiences, and marketing technology that support customers from discovery through membership, certification, and renewal. The role will help define an integration strategy connecting platforms such as HubSpot, Contentful, RudderStack, and AAPC’s CRM, so customer and member data flows reliably and Marketing has a holistic view of the people it serves. The engineer will work across purchased platforms and custom software. They will design, deliver, and support production-ready services, APIs, event pipelines, e-commerce and member experiences, and integrations where existing platforms do not meet AAPC’s needs. Software must be well-tested, secure, observable, and maintainable. The role partners closely with platform engineering on cloud infrastructure, deployment pipelines, observability, and incident response, and with the data platform team on reliable, consistent customer and member data. This is primarily a hands-on engineering role and the technical lead for the Marketing Technology team. The lead will establish standards, review designs and code, document architectural decisions, and mentor a team with strong front-end and CMS skills as they expand into integration, data, testing, observability, and agentic engineering. The position may also step into interim team leadership. It uses agentic coding tools and engineering practices to increase delivery effectiveness and builds AI-enabled tools and workflows that help Marketing work more independently, with appropriate data-quality and privacy guardrails. AAPC will level the role from senior through principal based on demonstrated capability. The position is remote. AAPC describes itself as the world’s largest and fastest-growing healthcare training, certification, and solutions association. Its stated values are driven, humble, transparent, supportive, and innovative.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, with a recent record of personally writing and shipping production code, including senior- or lead-level ownership of systems spanning multiple platforms and teams.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating production customer-facing web applications and digital products; e-commerce or member-experience work is preferred but described as ideal rather than mandatory.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including having designed, built, tested, and operated custom production services rather than only configuring or connecting third-party tools.
  • Track record designing loosely coupled distributed systems with well-defined data models and contracts.
  • Hands-on experience integrating marketing and customer platforms, such as marketing automation, CRM, CMS, CDP, and commerce, through APIs, webhooks, events, and native extension points; this is stated as critical domain experience.
  • Experience building customer-data foundations with data and platform teams, including event tracking, identity-resolution inputs, pipelines into a warehouse or data platform, and data-quality practices.
  • Good judgment about when to configure, integrate, or build, and ability to select a simple approach that will hold up over time.
  • Practical experience deploying and operating software on cloud infrastructure, including CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, monitoring, and production support.
  • Experience using agentic coding tools in daily work and ability to direct, evaluate, and integrate AI-generated work while remaining accountable for correctness and quality.
  • Fluency in marketing concepts such as funnels, lead lifecycle, attribution, segmentation, and campaign operations, and ability to communicate with marketers in their terms.
  • Technical leadership experience, including setting direction, mentoring engineers, and influencing stakeholders who do not report to the candidate.
  • Working knowledge of privacy and consent requirements such as CCPA, CAN-SPAM, and consent management as they apply to marketing data.
  • Clear, concise communication, particularly when asking questions, explaining tradeoffs, or pushing back on requests.
  • Initiative to improve surrounding systems and processes rather than repeatedly working around problems.
  • Demonstrated capability, judgment, and personal drive; the role requires experience with effective and ineffective marketing technology approaches and the ability to help a team move quickly and deliberately.

Nice To Haves

  • HubSpot experience, including data synchronization between marketing automation and CRM platforms.
  • Contentful or another headless CMS experience, including content modeling, component development, and integrations.
  • RudderStack or another customer data platform experience, including event-tracking design and identity resolution.
  • Experience leading marketing technology modernization or platform consolidation without disrupting live campaigns.
  • A personal project or story demonstrating curiosity, initiative, learning, decisions, and commitment to bringing an idea to life; integration, data, or marketing technology examples are welcomed.

Responsibilities

  • Help define the integration strategy and target architecture for AAPC’s marketing technology ecosystem, including HubSpot, Contentful, RudderStack, the CRM, and other Marketing systems.
  • Design, build, operate, and support custom services, APIs, and customer-facing applications, including e-commerce and member experiences for anonymous visitors and logged-in members.
  • Build and maintain integrations, adapters, and CMS components that connect platforms and enable Marketing to self-serve routine changes, using loose coupling, well-defined data contracts, and built-in security.
  • Partner with data platform and platform engineering teams to ensure member, customer, and engagement data flows reliably into the data platform, including events, identifiers, and consent data needed to connect identities across web, email, CRM, and commerce.
  • Translate SEO, GEO, and AEO strategy into technical capabilities such as structured data, machine-readable content, metadata architecture, and crawler-friendly application patterns.
  • Recommend when to build, buy, integrate, or retire technology; consolidate overlapping tools and move one-off solutions onto trusted, supported platforms.
  • Align software and integrations with platform infrastructure, deployment, observability, monitoring, and incident-response standards.
  • Implement behavioral observability for critical customer journeys, authentication, integrations, GA4 measurement, consent behavior, and e-commerce flows after releases.
  • Build automated test coverage, use and strengthen CI/CD quality gates, and verify releases across application boundaries.
  • Own delivery of software from discovery and technical design through implementation, deployment, production support, and continuous improvement.
  • Work directly with Marketing to understand business needs, translate them into technical direction, and challenge requests that do not support the strategy.
  • Serve as technical lead for the Marketing Technology team by setting standards, reviewing designs and code, documenting architectural decisions, and mentoring engineers in integration, data, testing, observability, and agentic practices.
  • Build AI-enabled Marketing capabilities such as segmentation, personalization, and workflow automation, with appropriate data-quality and privacy guardrails.
  • Treat consent, privacy, and responsible handling of personal data as design requirements.
  • Create and improve reusable skills, components, frameworks, workflows, and automation that make future engineering work more effective.
  • Measure success by marketing and business outcomes rather than stories completed or code produced.
  • From time to time, provide interim team leadership to keep work moving.
  • Use agentic coding tools and practices to direct, evaluate, and integrate AI-generated work while retaining accountability for its quality and correctness.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Health Savings Account.
  • Generous paid time off and holiday pay.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Remote/virtual-office consideration.
