About The Position

Emory University's National Biomedical Research Center (ENBRC) is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to lead a team of three software engineers. This role involves designing, developing, modernizing, and supporting custom applications for biomedical research, animal resource management, and business operations. The Lead Software Engineer will be a hands-on technical leader, collaborating with researchers, veterinarians, administrators, and business stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver scalable software solutions. Responsibilities include overseeing the full software development lifecycle, from architecture and development to testing, deployment, code reviews, and ongoing support. The position will focus on supporting the Animal Resource Management System (ARMS) and other business applications, driving modernization efforts by migrating legacy .NET applications to a modern Node.js architecture. This is a direct-hire position in Atlanta, GA, offering a hybrid work arrangement with required on-site presence for meetings and collaboration. Permanent U.S. work authorization is mandatory.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (Master's preferred).
  • 5+ years of software development experience.
  • At least 2 years of leadership or people management experience.
  • Strong experience with Node.js, JavaScript, Vue.js or React.js, GraphQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, and full-stack web application development.
  • Experience translating business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Experience mentoring developers.
  • Experience supporting enterprise applications.
  • Experience leading small software development teams and mentoring engineers in a collaborative environment.
  • Strong requirements gathering and stakeholder management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Understanding of application modernization initiatives, including migration of legacy systems to modern technology stacks.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based application environments and modern software architecture principles.
  • Comfortable working in a small team environment where flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to wear multiple hats are essential.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work in a hybrid environment and regularly collaborate with stakeholders on-site in Atlanta.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a small software development team responsible for designing, developing, modernizing, and supporting custom applications.

  • Deliver scalable software solutions.
  • Oversee the full software development lifecycle, including architecture, development, testing, deployment, code reviews, and ongoing application support.
  • Support the organization's primary Animal Resource Management System (ARMS).
  • Develop additional business applications focused on workflow automation, reporting, and process improvement.
  • Drive modernization efforts involving the migration of legacy .NET applications into a modern Node.js-based architecture.
  • Translate ambiguous business needs into technical solutions.
  • Mentor developers.
  • Support enterprise applications.
  • Review unfamiliar codebases, understand existing architectures, and make informed enhancement recommendations.
  • Manage multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Conduct code reviews and establish software development standards and best practices.
  • Support reporting and analytics solutions within enterprise application environments.
