Requirements

  • Worker generally works alone, with little supervision.
  • Must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each next task.
  • Proficient in Round saw (fitting/benching).
  • Proficient in Band saw (fitting/benching).
  • Proficient in milling and setting up saw guides.
  • Assist with saw changes, both band and circular.
  • Maintain and complete routine repairs to the filing room grinding equipment.
  • Assist with machine center alignment and maintenance.
  • Quality Control – measuring lumber and making machine adjustments.
  • Basic Computer Skills.
  • Demonstrated thoroughness and attention to detail with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Must possess good communication skills and work well in a team setting.
  • Assist production personnel with any material flow related to production equipment.
  • Be able to learn and operate equipment within Sawmill.
  • Keep up with production flow when on general labor.
  • Identify wood species.
  • Following lockout procedures is always mandatory.
  • Use of personal protective equipment should include eye protection, gloves, hearing protection, and sturdy boots.
  • Always practice safe lifting.
  • Keep all guards, shields, and covers in place to protect yourself.
  • Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery.
  • Always use our 14-step lockout/tagout procedure before doing any maintenance, clearing jams, or getting into machinery for any reason; be aware of stored energy.
  • Use proper body mechanics (ex: don’t overreach, get help as needed to push loads out).
  • Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection).
  • Be aware of and always communicate with your co-worker (ex: forklift driver).
  • Will be required to read and write during safety training.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a high level of communication with supervisors, machine operators, and maintenance regarding quality issues.
  • Troubleshoot saw damage, monitor saw changes, and research filing technology.
  • Supervise other filers and train them in all aspects of Sawfiling and Safety.
  • Inspect, level, tension, and sharpen bandsaws and circle saws.
  • Side grind bandsaws and circle saws.
  • Assist in tipping bandsaws and circle saws.
  • Help with repair of damaged saw teeth by welding or replacing the teeth (oxy/acetylene and TIG welding).
  • Assist in the process of knife grinding.
  • Assist with saw changes at edgers and band mills. Report incorrect saw change procedures and mishandling of saws or guides to supervisors.
  • Help with cleaning, pouring, and shaving of saw guides.
  • Understand filing room machine operation, calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
  • Have a good working knowledge of how to line up, operate, and repair all edgers and bandmills. Help maintain all lubricants at these workstations.
  • Have a strong working relationship with the maintenance department.
  • Attend and participate in daily/weekly management and maintenance meetings.
  • Maintain inventory levels of spare parts to ensure we have the needed parts on hand to make repairs.
  • Work with vendors on parts needed.
  • Enter Plan Orders into M3 for needed items for purchase.
  • Perform other duties and functions as assigned by supervisor for production and cleaning purposes.
  • Sweep filing room as needed.
  • Assist with cleaning of filing room machinery.
