About The Position

Position works under the general supervision of the Range Operations Branch Chief within the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobility and Security (DPTMS) on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Duties include using a computer-based communication system to control daily installation activity, reading military map coordinates to find locations on a military installation, interpreting military overlays to maintain range safety, interpreting safety policies to allow access to training center, operating the range safety radio network to control live fire training operations, disseminating information to users of the range complex to provide situational awareness, and maintaining communication with emergency services to aid customers. The position also involves providing information to the supervisor as requested concerning promotions, reassignment, recognition of outstanding performance, and personnel needs.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • Position designated "Mission Essential". In severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • One year of specialized experience which includes verifying scheduled training ranges; identifying training objectives and assigned training facilities; coordinating scheduling to avoid scheduling conflicts; and using a computer to input data.
  • Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
  • Must attach a copy of your transcripts if qualifying based on education.
  • Must attach a copy of your transcripts if qualifying based on a combination of education and experience.
  • Must show education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university if using foreign education.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • This position requires a 1 year probationary period during which the agency evaluates your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • Direct deposit of pay is required.
  • Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.

  • Term appointments may be extended beyond six (6) years, up to eight (8) years.
  • With DoD approval, Term appointment may be extended beyond eight (8) years.
  • Position may be made permanent without further competition.
  • Current permanent federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a Term appointment will be appointed/converted into a Term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position.
